Wellington Night Tour

As evening falls on Wellington, its harbour lights up for the night; and while some of our wildlife settles in at the day’s end, others come out for their night activities.

This tour provides you with amazing spectacular views and photo opportunities of our stunning harbour lights with 360-degree views of the city and suburbs, along with a 2 ½ hour guided torchlight walk among a local native rainforest wildlife sanctuary, where your guide will help you spot and learn about some of our native New Zealand rainforest inhabitants living in their open environment.

You will be picked up from your Wellington City meeting point and driven 10 minutes from the CBD to begin your torchlight experience at ZEALANDIA, the world’s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary. Set around a picturesque reservoir, ZEALANDIA is a groundbreaking 225-hectare conservation project home to some of New Zealand’s most rare and extraordinary wildlife – all thriving wild in their natural habitat.

Your tour will begin at twilight enabling you to see day birds settling for the night and hear the kiwi and morepork calls. You will continue to explore the sanctuary by torchlight as your guide leads you in search of some of the more distinctive sights and sounds of New Zealand’s native forest.

Experience many of the rare and endangered species which only come out at night. See unique species such as weta, glow worms and tuarata. Your group may see some of the 130 little spotted kiwis who call ZEALANDIA home – sightings of kiwi are common on these tours (circa 80%) but are not guaranteed. Being amid the forest sounds in the peace and quiet of the night is truly magical. Gain insights into New Zealand’s natural history and the significance of the unique species within Maori culture. The tour will end with a replenishing cup of hot kawakawa (bushman’s tea) in the Visitors’ Centre.No doubt you will now be feeling a little hungry, and your Xplor tour resumes with a traditional kiwi meal of Fish and Chips before you are driven to the top of Mount Victoria for a breathtaking 360 degree panoramic view of Wellington lit up by harbour lights. Have your cameras at the ready, as it is magnificent.

We then continue around Oriental Bay, before riding the iconic cable car, which will offer more wonderful views of the harbour. The next stop is viewing Parliament buildings lit up for the night, before concluding with your drop off back at your start point.

This tour will leave you with a special memory not only of our lovely harbour city lights at night but also with an insight into ZEALANDIA’s wonderful conservation efforts to ensure we can continue to protect and appreciate the ‘at risk’ wildlife and native plants that are so precious to us as a nation.
